Give one... Get one... or get a better one?

Finally... It only took them a year or so. The OLPC's Give-One-Get-One project is coming to Europe. Let me introduce the OLPC project for the people who have been sleeping in a cave for the last two years.

The OLPC project, also known as the "One Laptop Per Child" project is a collaboration between several hard- and software companies with the common goal of building a $100 laptop which will be sold/donated to third-world countries in order to help education... that's it in a nutshell.

The hardware specs can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OLPC_XO-1#Hardware. It runs on a customized version of Linux (Fedora GNU/Linux) and is designed with minimal power consumption, minimal production cost, a "cool" look, e-book functionality and it aims to be open source! Excellent! Read more »

A doubter's confession...

For years I've been struggling with the decision to run only Linux or only Windows on my main pc. I've been a fan of Linux since Suse 9.0. I love the idea about open concepts and a community supporting eachother and together working on software.

On the other hand, Microsoft is the market leader with their operating systems so if I want to work with certain commercial products, I have to buy and install Windows. I have nothing personal against Windows or Microsoft, just with some of their policies and monopolistic behaviour in the software industry.

Don't get me wrong, I actually think some Microsoft products are good products. I'm MCSE 2003 certified, it's hard to get the motivation to get that certification if you hold a grudge against their products... So I do have a little place in my heart for Microsoft... I admit... Read more »

Adobe, why is it so hard?

Haven't written a blog lately, mainly because time has been short on my agenda... Then you finally want to write something, you'll have to find a subject... My eye, actually my browser, caught the news that Adobe released Flash Web Player 10 for Linux!

I cheered...! Until I read that there's no x64 edition... I admit, they're doing a better job with this version than with version 9, it only took them six months to get that one to my favortie opensource desktop... So I actually shouldn't nag about this should I?

Well, I do feel like bitchin' because Adobe is still one of those companies that will not release their software for 64-bit platforms....!!!! Why you ask? I have no clue. Maybe they're not able to... the source code is specifically built for 32-bit? That would be plain stupid considering 64-bit is more and more common these days.
I don't even want your support...

For over a year I've been working for a large IT company in the Netherlands, the name is not relevant... some might recognize this situation though.

We are a Microsoft partner and ofcourse, all laptops and desktops (and mobiles) run on Windows Xp/Vista/Mobile. I work in the ECM field with products like IBM FileNet and Kofax Capture, and on my department we run a lot of different software packages and tools to be able to do our work.

Unfortunately the company wants us to run their customized and limited images, this for workplace management and support reasons. From an administration point of view, I totally agree with this. If an employee calls the support desk and complains that his laptop is having problems, you want to be able to have a managable and familiair image on that laptop. This is most likely a normal policy for most IT companies with more than a 100 employees. So no argument there... Read more »

Switching to Tweakers.net

Today is the first day of my blogging activities at Tweakers.net. I used to have my own blog at http://opensource.opweb.nl/.

I still have that one but got sick of coding and maintaining the webpage, so for now I'll leave it the way it is and upload my blogs to both websites until I totally get fed up with the opweb version and eventually take that one offline. Read more »

Where was that F1 key?

Earlier in june Charles Davis announced they were starting the summer with a document-cleaning-project, called the The Summer of Documentation. The goal of this little project was to motivate as many people as possible to help and assist in ordening and cleaning the Ubuntu documentation. A beautifull idea, unless the result is not as good as hoped... As a matter of fact, they hardly got any work done. 27 Wiki pages were cleaned up, expanded and brought to “standard” by 4 people. Read more »

Ikea, for ALL your solutions

Who would've thought that Ikea would be a 'sponsor' of a Linux Rendering cluster? I've seen some funny mods with cabinets and table before, but this one really made me smile... Janne, a swedish guy who work for Svensk Film Effekt used a 30 euro costing cabinet (the Helmer) to build his Linux Rendering Cluster in. His goal was to build a cheap and energy-efficiënt rendering cluster, based on Linux to render his 3d animations. Read more »

Foxconn sabotages linux?

Last week the hardware company Foxconn came in the news in a pretty interesting way. An angry Linux user by the name of 'TheAlmightyCthulhu' posted the statement that Foxconn would be sabotaging Linux with their motherboards and collaborating secretly with Microsoft. These are quite serious statements in the world of 'Linux vs Windows' so some explanation is in place. Read more »

Tux Software

For the average Linux user, software can be a bitch to install if you can't find your software package in the normal repositories. Kevin Thompson thought of a solution for this, he started Tux Software with a couple of friends.

Tux Software is a new website (they just moved from Alpha to Beta stage) that provides you with a nice service of searching and installing popular and less-popular software. After adding their repositories and installing a small tool (Linux Software Installer), you can search the database for software that is supported for your Linux distribution. Next thing, you download the .deb package and install it. An other way of using their website is installing the LSI tool, and browse the website for your software. After finding the tool you want, you can click on the link: INSTALL NOW with L.S.I and the L.S.I takes over from there... Pretty smart system for the beginning user I'd say.
Five new Ubuntu features!

Usually I don't put 'news' on the frontpage, that's what news-websites do... Yet I found this a very interesting one, too interesting to keep to myself.

Canonical has planned five major Ubuntu features for the release of this Octobre, version 8.10 (Interpid Ibex). As always, Canonical surprises us twice a year with a new and shiny distro, there's always a few things in these that get the community excited. This Octobre is no different... We set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in 24 hours. With your help we reached 8,002,530 downloads.

Speaking of a bad reputation...

I believe that a lot of people are actually ready for opensource products, at least an opensource operating system like Linux (I'm thinking openSUSE, Ubuntu or CentOS). I've written down a few 'known reasons' I've heard over the years why people wouldn't migrate to Linux:

1. Installation of Linux requires expert nerd-knowledge
2. Linux is buggy and crashes a lot (heard that from computerstore clerks!)
3. If Linux gives errors, you have to know elite terminal commands to fix it
4. Linux doesn’t run on common hardware, most hardware isn’t supported!
5. The games you can buy in every store don't run on Linux

Let’s clarify some of these things up… Read more »

Here we go...

Well... This is it... I finally gave in and started my own blog. The idea came to me two nights ago. I had trouble sleeping and was thinking about several things... Suddenly I decided I wanted to make a blog about opensource.

To tell you the truth, my usual hosting-space (opensource.opweb.nl) has been my private-project for 3 years now. Three years... In the beginning I had the idea of setting up a Dutch opensource-news/helpdesk/... portal to bring opensource information to the Dutch community in easy to understand language... aimed at beginning Linux users. Several attempts later I stranded with the coding work because I made the project to big to handle on my own. Work and personal life became busier and the project was forgotten. Until 2 nights ago...
